A developing vision for Aotearoa

Growing stronger communities, from the ground up.

Kai Ora is a developing community initiative for Aotearoa New Zealand, exploring how shared gardens, fruit trees, seeds, knowledge and simple growing spaces could help make fresh food and food-growing skills more accessible.

Grow. Learn. Share.

The idea

A simple idea with deep roots.

For generations, growing food at home and sharing produce with neighbours was simply part of everyday life. Kai Ora wants to help make that normal again.

Our vision is to work alongside schools, communities, councils, landowners and local organisations to create places where people could grow food, learn practical skills and share what the land provides.

Our proposed model

Five ways to help an idea take root.

Designed to work together, each element could help knowledge, confidence and fresh food travel further.

01

Community Growing Zones

Shared garden beds where local people could grow vegetables, herbs and food together.

02

Edible Commons

Fruit trees, berries and herbs in suitable shared spaces — productive landscapes that could keep giving.

03

Harvest Table

A simple covered place where produce could be shared freely: take what your whānau needs; leave some for another whānau.

04

Grow Library

A weather-protected library of practical books about soil, composting, gardening and horticulture.

05

Seed Library

Free seeds and practical information that people could take home, plant and share.

From one garden to many

“A garden can feed people. Knowledge can keep growing.”

Kai Ora hopes to make seeds, seedlings, simple instructions, workshops and practical growing knowledge available so one shared garden could inspire dozens — eventually hundreds — of home gardens.

Growing food where children grow.

Kai Ora hopes to work with willing schools to explore fruit trees, edible gardens and practical food-growing education on school grounds — from composting and seed growing to seasonal learning and harvesting.

Schools: Register Your Interest

Have land that could grow something?

Kai Ora is interested in talking with councils, churches, schools, community organisations, developers, businesses and private landowners about land that could potentially support community food-growing.

Offer Land

We’re looking for:

  • •Reasonable community access
  • •Sunlight
  • •Water access or practical water potential
  • •Long-term availability
  • •Safe soil or room for raised beds

“Even a piece of unused land could become something that feeds, teaches and connects a community.”
